Big Sur
This year our Grade 5 class will be attending science camp at Big Sur. Students have the opportunity to learn about a unique and diverse environment close to home. Big Sur offers vast wildernesses and breathtaking views. The area is great for outdoor education programs as it contains diverse ecosystems.
We will be camping in Pfeiffer State Park with faculty, and instructors from Naturalists at Large. Small groups of students will be in tents, closely supervised by faculty and the staff of Naturalists at Large. The program offers an education component, team building exercises, hiking and exposure to a wonderful environment close to home.
Educational Overview
Geology and Mountain Building - The mountains of the rugged Big Sur coastline rise rapidly to 5,000 ft. within two miles of the ocean. This is the most abrupt elevation change of the entire Pacific shore.
Vegetation - Six major vegetation types (chaparral, oak and pine woodlands, riparian woodlands, redwood and tanbark-oak woodlands, and
Whales - Three whales species are commonly seen off the South Coast - Gray, Blue and Humpback.
Condors - The California Condor is North America's largest and most endangered land bird.
Coastal Redwoods – This species ranks as the earths tallest living inhabitant.
Riparian Zones – Fresh running streams and a wide assortment of native critters makes an exploration fun and educational.
Coastal & Beach Processes – Tidal zones and coastal landforms make for a rich learning experience set between mountain and sea.
